42 White Rock has been a photographer's shop since 1910. Over a century of continuous photography on the same Hastings seafront corner.
In 1902, Fred Judge established a photography business in Hastings, selling camera equipment and glass plates, later producing postcards that would become iconic images of the town. Judge was a Royal Photographic Society member whose work exhibited internationally.
By 1910, Marriott's became the sole Hastings agent for Judge's postcards and took over the premises at 42 White Rock. The Marriott family would run the shop continuously for over 112 years, through two World Wars, the digital revolution, and everything in between.
Tariq started printing films at thirteen years old in a South London darkroom. He's been a professional photographer since 1992, shooting corporate portraits and events across London and the South East.
When Marriott's closed its doors in 2022, the 114-year photographic lineage at 42 White Rock was in danger of ending. Tariq reopened it. Same address. Same craft. A new name above the door, but the continuum unbroken.
